Coach Tracking Study

sports coach UK is conducting a four year tracking study of coaches in the UK to examine their development as coaching professionals and to understand the long-term impact of coach education and support programmes.

Aims & Objectives

  • Explore coaches' history and factors influencing entry into coaching
  • Explore coach development in terms of education, qualification and experience
  • Understand the impact of coach education and support programmes on coaches' experiences, knowledge and practice
  • Identify the changing career profile of coaches

Methods

  • Phase one: In-depth interviews with a varied sample of 20 coaches per year
  • Phase two: Self-completion survey with a representative sample of 2000 coaches per year

Practical Implications

  • Improve understanding of how coach education and development programs are targeted at coaches at different stages of development
  • Improve the content and delivery of future coach education provision
  • Provide recommendations for coach management and development, for both policy and practice
