The Sports Partnership Herefordshire and Worcestershire works with local authorities, clubs, schools, coaches, national organisations and local communities to give information and options for a more active, healthy and fun lifestyle and to create more opportunities for everybody to get more active, more often.

Background

As Training and Development Officer for the partnership, Georgie Fenton spends around two thirds of her time on coach education and development, including the workshop programme, ensuring that she is addressing the development requirements of its coaches and planning workshops accordingly.

Solution

In order to organise her quarterly workshop programme to meet the needs of the coaches, Georgie consults with local authorities at the planning stage to discuss club and coach requirements. She also compiles details from past workshop programmes, looking at requested workshops and attendance levels, as well as reviewing volunteer workforce development needs with her colleagues. She also encourages clubs and coaches to get in touch if they want a workshop that isn’t on the programme as there can often be enough coaches from several clubs to fill their own workshop if it’s requested.

To ensure the programme is well publicised, Georgie uses social media sites Facebook and Twitter, along with the partnership’s website – www.morethansportcoaching.com – coach education brochures, e-shots and district newsletters to launch and promote the workshop programme.

Results

Georgie is pleased with the success of the workshop programme. From April 2011 to March 2012, 28 sports coach UK workshops, attended by around 443 people, were delivered as part of the programme, including:

The Sports Partnership Herefordshire and Worcestershire has witnessed the continued development of its coaches and volunteer workforce through the programme and is pleased with the progress that has been made.

Georgie has found it a really smooth process, working with sports coach UK to organise and book the workshops, in particular the quick responses from the Workshop Booking Centre team and the good relationship that has been built up between Georgie, her team and sports coach UK. Georgie is also impressed with the quality of the tutor workforce in the West Midlands and how they really help to engage and encourage the coaches in the workshops.

‘I’d definitely recommend sports coach UK workshops. Organising them into a programme helps us to meet the needs of our coaches and ensure that we cover a range of workshops, locations and dates. The responsiveness of sports coach UK makes it straightforward to book the workshops, and the workshops also enable our coaches to meet up and bounce ideas off each other.’
