Sports Coach UK has achieved the Intermediate Level of the Equality Standard: A Framework for Sport, by demonstrating a commitment to equality and diversity.

The Standard – owned by the five Sport Councils (Sport England, Sport Northern Ireland, Sport Scotland, Sport Wales and UK Sport), provides a framework for sports organisations to widen access and reduce inequalities in sport and physical activity, for under-represented individuals, groups and communities.

There are four levels of achievement: Foundation, Preliminary, Intermediate and Advanced.

Moving from Preliminary to Intermediate, Sports Coach UK has shown through an assessment process how it meets the following outcomes:

  1. Progress in the implementation of an equality action plan.
  2. Equality screening of relevant policies and practices to ensure they are fit for purpose and accessible to members of staff.
  3. Develop and implement positive action schemes to increase diversity, such as supporting women into coaching through the Reach brand, and helping more disabled people into coaching through the ‘Inclusive Coach’ project – run in partnership with Scottish Disability Sport and sportscotland.

Chief Executive Officer for Sports Coach UK, Mark Gannon, said:

“We take our commitment to equality and diversity very seriously and to successfully demonstrate that to the Sports Council Equality Group and the equality standard assessor, reiterates that we are moving in the right direction.

“As the technical agency for coaching, inclusivity is at the very heart of everything we do, Equality, diversity and inclusion are embedded within our strategy and not stand alone objectives, therefore I am delighted we have reached the Intermediate Level of the Equality Standard.”

Chief Executive Officer for UK Sport, Liz Nicholl CBE, said:

“Sports Coach UK has shown a genuine commitment to promote and develop equality across the organisation.

“It has ensured that all staff understand the importance of equality and diversity, which is of course relevant to their own work; and to be proactive in ensuring that everything they do is inclusive.

“I commend them on reaching the Intermediate Level of the Standard.”
