Women into coaching - This Girl Can

Sport England's This Girl Can media campaign lit up television and cinema screens across the country. It's a celebration of women exercising everywhere, no matter how jiggly their bits or how red their faces.

As the UK’s lead agency for coaching, we're proud to be supporting This Girl Can by tackling the gender imbalance in coaching. We believe that more women coaching offers more choice and more coaches, which ultimately means more women participating in sport. In parallel with This Girl Can, we announced an initiative to recruit more women into coaching. This initiative has become Reach.

Currently there are more men coaching than women and we think that everyone doing sport should have the choice as to who coaches or leads their activity.

EU research has highlighted that women only account for around 30% of coaching workforce, this proportion drops to 17% of qualified coaches and only 12% of highly qualified coaches. sports coach UK is actively involved in the SCORE Project to address this. If you want to learn more about European work in this area, start here.

Meanwhile, back at home we're supporting Governing Bodies and County Sports Partnerships to provide opportunities for women to be active and get into coaching with Project 3000. Prio to this national roll-out a pilot scheme called Project 500 was run by seven County Sport Partnerships in the South East. Read below how one of the coaches benefited from it.

Pippa says the funding from Project 500 for Flipitas Gymnsatics has offered invaluable training opportunities for her coaches.

Women into coaching is about real women of all ages coaching with confidence, whilst having fun and building leadership and coaching skills, which will empower women to reach out confidently in all aspects of their lives.

Sport England's This Girl Can campaign aims to celebrate active women everywhere and get more women exercising – no matter how jiggly their bits are or how red their face goes. The campaign was developed by Sport England following research showing that while 75 per cent of women say they want to be more active, one of the reasons stopping them is a fear of judgement on appearance, ability or how they choose to spend time on themselves.
