3rd UK Coaching Summit 2008

Building the Coaching Workforce - Ricoh Arena, Coventry, 22 and 23 April 2008. Message from sports coach UK Group Chief Executive, Dr Patrick Duffy.

The 3rd UK Coaching Summit will take place on 22 and 23 April 2008 at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry. This event, part of a yearly series leading to 2016, aims to significantly widen the number of key influences and practitioners involved in the development and implementation of the UK Coaching Framework.

The UK Coaching Framework provides the blueprint for developing the UK Coaching System with the goal of being the best in the world by 2016. The vision of the Framework is to develop a cohesive, ethical, inclusive and valued coaching system, where skilled coaches support children, players and athletes at all stages of their development. The Framework will ensure that both the development and delivery of the coaching system is relevant across the whole of the UK taking into account the policies, strategies and priorities of the devolved administrations, the Home Country Sports Councils and UK Sport.

The challenge of building the best coaching system in the world by 2016 will be met by a world-leading workforce across the coaching landscape. This coaching workforce consists primarily of the coach, trainers, assessors and verifiers. These people work within the context of governing bodies of sport, education, national, regional and local agencies. Within these agencies there is an extensive network of people playing roles, which set policy, develop and implement the coaching system across the UK.

The theme of the 3rd UK Coaching Summit will concentrate on how we can build the best coaching workforce in the world. It aims to inform the audience of the latest development of the UK Coaching Framework, inspire us all to constantly improve and empower the whole coaching workforce to build the best coaching system in the world by 2016.

The workshops will be streamed so that delegates can pick sessions that most closely match their work situation and experience:

  • Policy - national to local roles that set and direct strategies for coaching across the UK
  • Development - managers and leaders of coaching development, education, qualifications and employment
  • Implementation - coaches and other roles involved in supporting the delivery of coaching to sports participants

Some of the topics to be addressed will include:

  • World Leading Coaching System - what is it and what does it look like for you?
  • Practical examples from each of the five strategic actions of the UK Coaching Framework
  • We all have roles to play - what is yours in making this happen?
  • What governing bodies of sport and agencies are doing to implement the UK Coaching Framework?
  • Successful models of participant pathways / coach pathways
  • Lessons from the trailblazing sports
  • Coaching as a profession - a rosy future?
  • Coaching accreditation - raising the bar?
  • Coaching children - latest developments
  • The employment of coaches - the role of coaching agencies

Attendance at the Summit will be targeted at the agencies that have formally signed up to its implementation, with 80% of places being assigned to these agencies. A quota system will be in place, where each agency will be assigned a specified number of places to ensure the involvement of a full cross-section from the key target groups and on a UK-wide basis. Larger agencies and trailblazing sports can expect a quota of in the region of 20 places at the event (subject to confirmation). The remaining 20% of places will be assigned on a first come, first served basis.

The 2008 UK Coaching Summit will take place at The Ricoh Arena, Coventry on 22 and 23 April. Further information will be communicated shortly. If you have any queries related to the Summit, please email events@sportscoachuk.org and we will be happy to help.

Yours sincerely
