The importance of developing FUNdamental movement skills (eg. running, jumping, throwing, catching, striking, and kicking) has been closely associated with increased positive movement experiences, reduced drop out from youth sport and consequently an affinity towards lifelong participation. The wider implications are the impact this can have on physical and mental health. It has long been thought that the development of skills used in sport and dance involves the modification and combination of more basic fundamental movement abilities into goal directed movements of increasing complexity. The principles that underpin both generic and sport-specific movement skills can be referred to as the FUNdamentals of Movement, and this term refers to the ABCs of movement - Agility, Balance, Coordination and speed.

There is mounting evidence to suggest that there are significant long-term effects of poor early movement experiences and that problems encountered in childhood can persist well into adulthood. Recent studies have reported that children who were identified with poor coordination at primary school age perceived themselves to have lower levels of physical activity, endurance and sports competence later in life.
Understanding the foundation of these experiences and the motives behind continued participation or drop out is not straightforward and involves a combination of physical, psychological and social factors.

The following audit was undertaken to provide a central information source of available resources related to the FUNdamentals phase of Long-term Athlete Development (LTAD). The audit takes a holistic approach to the FUNdamentals phase and takes into consideration elements covering the physical, psychological and social maturation of young athletes. This service is being provided by sports coach UK to help coaches and teachers to decide on resources that may be appropriate to their needs.
