Background
Government interest in physical education (PE) and School Sport has recognised the need to provide high-quality teaching at grass-roots level, particularly in schools. Since 2003, the Coaching for Teachers (CfT) programme has successfully provided opportunities for teachers and Adults Other Than Teachers (AOTTs) who contribute to school sport through the extended curriculum.
Within the National Physical Education and School Sport Development Programme, the primary aim of CfT is to improve the quality of teaching, coaching and learning in school sport. By attending sports governing body courses, teachers and AOTTs can improve the quality of their sessions, learn new sports, update their knowledge and obtain qualifications.
The full CfT programme has the support of the Department for Educations and Skills (DfES), the consortium who manages the programme, and the association for Physical Education (afPE).
CfT and AOTTs hold specific relevance in relation to the UK Action Plan for Coaching. Providing sporting and coaching opportunities for everyone from children through to elite athletes and coaches from volunteers through to high performance is vital. CfT encompasses many elements which support the Action Plan and drive provision of sport and coaching forward inline with the governments wider agenda and the legacy going upto and beyond the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
