Women into High Performance Coaching
Background - the Women into High Performance Coaching Programme (WHPC) was originally a three-year pilot scheme aimed at developing women who were/are important in the future development of coaching in the UK.
- the programme was established in September 2000 by the Women’s Sports Foundation (WSF) and sports coach UK in partnership with four National Governing Bodies of Sport (NGBs): Cricket (ECB), Rugby Union (RFUW), Football (FA) and Rugby League (RLPB) who all signed up to the programme and are committed to the representation of more women at the elite end of sports coaching.
- twenty-six female coaches were originally selected by the sports and participated in the scheme
- the short-term aim was to develop a programme that provides the support and training required to enable women with the necessary skills and competencies to move into a High Performance Coaching environment.
- longer term the aim is to identify women with the ability to make a difference in coaching in the future if provided with the right nurturing and development opportunities.
- the programme offers each coach an opportunity to be supported and resourced in the following aspects of their coach development training:
- individual Training Needs Assessment and Continual Professional Development (CPD)
- resources and funding towards further education and training - sports specific, generic and personal development skills
- group training events 3 per year
The scheme is funded by all the contributing partners, with sports coach UK providing the group CPD training days on generic topics important to each coach’s all round development, NGBs fund the Individual Training Needs Analysis and each participating NGB commits to supporting the cost of their coach’s identified CPD programme.
