A Standard for Sport

Achieving Racial Equality: A standard for sport is a tool for national governing bodies and sports organisations to help them plan, develop and achieve racial equality in their sport and in their organisation. As with other similar tools the standard can be used to evaluate progress, set levels of achievement and plan improvements.

The standard covers three areas of action - commitment, policy and planning; participation and public image; and administration and management - and is based on three levels of achievement - Preliminary, Intermediate and Advanced.

Achieving Racial Equality: A standard for sport has been produced by Sporting Equals, in partnership with the Commission for Racial Equality and Sport England, to help sports organisations and governing bodies plan, develop, evaluate and achieve racial equality in all aspects of sport.

At a ceremony at Twickenham Rugby Ground on Monday 11 December 2000, sports coach UK became the first sporting organisation to be recognised for its achievements in racial equality by completing the Preliminary level of the Standard. Four governing bodies of sport were also recognised: cricket, rugby union, rugby league and basketball.

To achieve the Preliminary level sports coach UK had to commit and show evidence of having:

  • made a clear public commitment to achieving racial equality at the highest level
  • developed a written statement or policy on racial equality which links to the governing bodies aims and objectives
  • developed racial equality action plans or objectives within existing statements and set appropriate racial equality targets
  • communicated the racial equality policy and action plan to all involved in development and delivery of the sport

sports coach UK is now currently working towards the Intermediate level.
