Mission Statement

sports coach UK is dedicated to guiding the development and implementation of a coaching system, recognised as a world leader, for all coaches at every level in the UK. We will work with our partners to achieve this by promoting:

  • professional and ethical values and inclusive and equitable practice
  • agreed national standards of competence as a benchmark at all levels
  • a regulated and licensed structure
  • recognition, value and appropriate funding and reward
  • a culture and structure of innovation, constant renewal and continuous professional development.

A central issue arising from our Mission Statement is to describe what a world class coaching system will look like. We believe that the likely characteristics of a world class coaching system will include:

  • coach development linked firmly to player development
  • continuous learning and inclusive practice based on a strong foundation of research, continuous professional development and ethical practice
  • central coordination by an organisation empowered to do so but 'owned' by everybody
  • simplicity and flexibility, not hierarchy and rigid bureaucracy
  • use of a common framework of agreed national standards
  • shared strategic approaches with common generic components
  • effective management of coaches (paid and unpaid) and their development through registers/licences
  • not allowing organisations and/or individuals to opt out of the system
  • a focus on adding value to the experience of the individual player/performer and the individual coach as well as the player-coach interaction at all levels.
